Books

I have published three books. They come out of the same work I write about on this site: telling the truth about addiction, what it cost, and what it has taken to rebuild. One hundred percent of the net profits from these books go to The Artemis Council, the nonprofit I founded to support children affected by a parent's addiction.

If you choose to buy a copy, thank you. Every net dollar goes to that work.

From Boy Scout to Bank Robber and Back

A True Story of Addiction, Recovery, and Redemption

This is my memoir. It is about growing up with promise, losing my way to addiction, facing the consequences of that life, including crime, and doing the slow work of recovery: taking responsibility, making amends, and trying to live with honesty. It is not a story about becoming perfect. It is a story about coming back.

The Storm Inside My Dad: A Story About Addiction, Recovery, and Knowing What Belongs to You

This is a story for children ages 8 to 11 who are trying to understand a parent's addiction and recovery. It follows a young girl who loves her dad and has hard questions: Does he still love me? Did I do something wrong? Can I make him better? The book is written so children can see that they did not cause the addiction, they cannot control it, and they do not have to fix it. Kids are allowed to be kids.

The Dad in the Doorway: A 365-Day Devotional for Fathers in Recovery from Alcohol and Addiction

This is a year of short, practical daily readings for fathers who got sober and now have to show up for their kids one ordinary day at a time. Each undated page offers direct encouragement, a small "Try this today" step, and a short closing thought or prayer. It is a companion for the work. It does not replace treatment.
